What's the point?

So, I need to vent for a minute. I went to a school board meeting regarding the negotiations of the 2009-2010 school year budget. The proposed budget is to freeze teacher salaries and not give us our regular steps increase or lane change....which also means I will not get an increase in pay for completing my Master's Degree.

They allowed teachers and patrons to voice their comments, but then went right to approving the budget. They said they care about teachers, but they don't. They didn't even discuss or value our opinions. They already had their minds made up.

So I took advantage of this wonderful program the school district offered to help me get my Master's degree. I took out student loans and worked hard for two years and now I'm getting nothing for it. What's the point?

There were other options that I won't get into right now, but apparently they're doing all of this in the best interest of the students. How is not supporting your teachers in the best interest? All the extra time and extra money I spent out of my own pocket are going to be no more. I guess I'll be doing all worksheets next year and not doing the fun creative activities that help my students learn more effectively.

Good job board of education, way to slap all your teachers in the face and screw me over.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I wish that there was something that I could do.

I realize that this may be too little too late and words probably don't help much at this point, but my daughter has absolutely loved being in your class this year and specifically having you as her teacher.

I have never seen her so excited to go to school. She couldn't wait to go back On Track and is quite sad now that the year is ending, knowing that you will no longer be her teacher.

You have made the year for her and her Mother and I really appreciate that.

I guess we all have to remember WHY we went into teaching. I definitely knew it was NOT for the money those many, many years ago. Yes, it would be nice to be compensated for what we do! But, you have a gift! You are a natural teacher. It is WHO you are! Your skills and desires and ideas will always be there and the children will benefit from your knowledge and expertise. The district can't take that away from you. I am sorry this has happened. Your master's program has helped you and you gained from it. The kids will also. That is why we are here! For the kids! Don't let them suffer because of the split of districts and all the "stuff" that happens during that process. You are a super example of "the best" --- We can all learn to be better when we watch YOU!

This sounds a lot like what the government is doing to us. Why get an education to earn more money if the government is going to take away all the money you earned? Grrr!

Good for you for going out and being an activist. Just sorry it didn't pay off this time (literally). I am with you on how they have their minds made up and nothing is going to change that. It does also seem like they like to hide behind the phrase "in the students' best interest". They used it a lot last year if I remember right and many of the things had nothing to do with what was best for the kids. Sorry darling.

What a bunch of crap! This is why America is starting to falter! Until we recognize that children's lives can be shaped and altered in a positive way in the classroom for the benefit of society then we are lost. Teacher's need to be monetarily compensated for their huge sacrifice, time spent at work, and all the time they spend at home grading papers and making lesson plans. Instead the government writes checks to failing banks and other bad businesses that can't make smart decisions in a free-market economy. How about you write a check for our failing educational system!?

I love you sis, and I am sorry to hear the bad news. Keep your head up and move to Japan! I hear they pay excellent for teachers that want to teach English....I wonder why their businesses are surpassing ours???

Love you

Doug

Thanks everyone! I'm having a better day. I have to admit, my emotions were definitely on the surface when writing that entry. I can't deny that I love teaching and I love the kids. And Dave, I have loved having Abbi in my class-I am going to miss her next year!

I know how hard you have worked and how much of a sacrifice it was to go and get your masters degree...I was there for the begining of it...and all I can say is how sorry I am.

You are an amazing teacher and I appreciate all you do for your students, even though I don't have any kids in your class.

Please don't forget that. If there is anything I can help you with, cutting anything out or correcting any papers, let me know!

Love ya!

Angie

Are you kidding!!!!! That makes me so mad! I have to say that I was a pretty good teacher, and things like that make me never want to go back to teaching. I want to teach, but I can't stand dealing with stuff like this. I'm so sorry, but on a better note, Andy's nephew Johnny told me that you are awesome! So keep up the good work, even if the district doesn't deserver you! Are you going to the reunion?

That is horrible! I get so frustrated with how the world treats the teachers of their children. Few jobs could be more valuable to our future.

I feel the exact same way. What pisses me off is that there are teachers at my school saying we're all griping too much. I'm like, you'd be griping too if this happened to you! I don't know if it will do any good, but I kinda want to gather everyone in our program and compile something to give to the school board. The worst part about this is that they did it after we'd already signed our intent to return. Here! Sign a contract with us, then we'll screw you over afterward! So annoying...
